Narrative

Inbetweeners Movie Narrative Theory

1. Identify the key actions within the opening - what kinds of actions are included and how is the narrative moved forward?
The key actions with the opening sequence involves a camera flying around in the air, passing through the streets. The scenes vary from a family discussion with Wills family, showing Neil working in a supermarket, Simon with his girlfriend,to going into Jays Room and shows him watching X rated content. For people who haven't watched it before the movie they can see that the movie is going to be on four typical lads and their antics.

2. Identify the enigma codes within the opening - what kinds of questions are posed and how is the audience meant to read these codes?
Where are they all living now?
Whats happened to them?
How comes Niel is the only one with a job, as he is the most unlikely to have one?
Who's is this random woman Neil kisses after his work shift?
Why was will not invited to the wedding?

3. Identify key characters and think about what they represent in the opening.
The key characters are the four boys Will,Simon,Neil and Jay
Will-is classed as the sensible one, the type of person who is a stereotypical 'nerd' at school.
Simon- is probably the most accepted to the 'cooler kids' in the school. At the start of the movie he is going out with 'Carley' who is a girl all kids like.
Neil- is the stupid one who doesn't have any general knowledge at all there for surprising he has a job.
Jay- is the typical lad, thinking that he can get all the girls where really he doesn't at all.
4. Interpret the cultural codes in the opening. What kind of knowledge is being drawn on? social/historical/political/art and culture etc. Highlight the 3 most important references in the opening that help with audience understanding.
There are no cultural codes in the opening scene, there also is no knowledge to be drawn out of the start, other than the fact that they are going on a lads holiday. The most important thing the opening is that they all decided to go on a lads holiday and they all said that. Showing that it wasn't really the best opening sequence.

5. Identify key themes and analyse how they are presented visually/technically.
The key themes include how all the four boys have moved on since after they finished school. They show this by showing them all in their own houses or working for Neils case.
